Heard in Fredrtiksfors Oct. 22-23

I was surprised to hear that many daytimers from the US east coast when I started listen October 22nd. although no new ones could be successfully identified. Splatter from European stations was to strong in most cases for the weak signals. North American stations went on for most of the night with only short interuptions from the West Indies or Latin America, but mostly only dominants. The last hour up to sunrise the signals were weaker and faded out. Some minutes just after local sunrise here there were some very strong signals from Colombia but only for a few minutes and then the band went dead.

1550 23.10 0600 HJZA G 12 Radio Bogota var en av de colombianer som kom upp med fantastisk styrka under någon minut innan bandet dog helt. JE

Some July loggings from the DX shack at Fredriksfors

For the first time in some three months, I took the trip to Fredriksfors for a night´s listening. It is slowly getting darker at nights and chances to hear something interesting will increase. Not this night, however. To strong interference from a thunderstorm and to weak signals from the stations coming through. Most of the signals originated from Brazil.

1440 22.7 0105 ZYH466 Radio Independencia Santo Amoro BA med ett skraltigt id här. Bättre sedan men då bara kedjeanrop för ”Deus e Amor” och religiöst. En annan brasse gick nästan lika bra, troligen Radio Livre. JE

4749,953 21.7 2130 RRI Makassar gick ganska hyggligt (QSA 2-3). Försvann helt strax före 22- stängde eller soluppgång? Ingen annan indones på 60 m, däremot gick Palangkaraya bra på 3325. JE (Jan Edh, DRAK)

Fredriksfors July 16th.
For the first time in more than 3,5 month I tried the airwaves in Fredriksfors again (together with Rolf Larsson). Well, it was perhaps as expected (in other words rather lousy).The visits earlier this summer has been to stock up firewood for the coming season. And more is to come, we hope another good season...In the afternoon July 15th there had also been a club meeting for DRAK where mainly the hams had talked about their antennas and BBQ.When I arrived at a later hour only Rolf Larsson was left, and we started to listen after sunset.Up to 23 UTC there were no sign of Brasilian or other TA-signals. On 1566 I looked for the Italian but there was TWR Benin very dominant.Start again 01 UT with a slight ”top” around 02 UTC. Signals on several channels but most of them very weak. Except from the identified ones these could be mentioned: 920 (presumed Paraguay), 950 (Argentina?), 1130 (Spanish with news), 1180 (Rebelde?), 1290 (YV or Murialdo?), 1390, 1400 (religious, could be Harbour Light), 1470, 1500, 1620 (Argentina?).

CMLL Radio Victoria Cuba 1350 kHz

1350 4.4 0400 CMLL Radio Victoria, Cuba w. national anthem and station ID. Not previously reported here but thanks to Henrik Klemetz who solved the mystery we can now report the following. HK writes:

"Your "Victoria" is correct but when you consult the World Radio TV Handbook you don't get much help. It is indeed Radio Victoria but the call is not correct. While searching the web I found that the call according to http://www.upec.cu/baul/37.html is really CMLL since 2005. In the WRTH it is listed on 1040, 1050 and 1060 under its old call CMKT.

The station ID can be found on the web but is not easy to find as the station doesn't have a conventional website but can be found on http://www.tiempo21.cu/. The ID which has been uploaded, and which I enclose, is not completely in accordance with what you have recorded where you can hear a female voice in the middle and at the end of the ID. Besides at least one AM frequency has been changed (1040?) and the FM frequency does not sound as 94.5 but something different; I leave it at that.

Thus you have found a news item which once again shows why Jens Frost did not like the epithet "The DXer's Bible". He realized that the book contained too many errors. Listen to the old recording which I dug up last week. It's not on the web but the Fredriksfors team maybe can upload it?"

Spring is almost here - and the conditions are deteriorating....

I´ve just returned from Fredriksfors.It´s spring! A beautiful day. The sky is all blue, almost no wind and several degrees abouve zero. The night in Fredriksfors was also just great with all the stars.We really need this.As a radio enthusiast it´s not that great.I just got the information that one of the last foreign broadcasters with programs in Swedish will stop that service March 27th: Radio Moskva. It´s a pity.And the weather is far more fantastic than how the radio signals propagated this night.In the evening the philippino on 1314 DWXI and Japanese JOIF 1413 came through. Later some of the most common NA-stations from the east coast and some Puerto Ricans.In the morning there were far more stations and also much stronger signals. But still, I felt as it was the usual and wellknown stations with very few surprises.In the lower part of the band there were lots of Cuban stations and some of the stronger ones from Venezuela and Colombia. In the upper part of the band also some North American stations from the east coast came through.I spent much time on 1200 kHz and have some time recordet there for further checking, but I´m afraid that it is only CFGO and Radio Tiempo there. But a slight hope of something more...However, signals were still propgating, many at quite decent strength, a good time after 07 UTC, more than two hours after sunrise.

WCRA 1330 seems to be having a great period at the moment. New transmitter or aerial? I suppose it should be counted as a new station by now??? On 1490 there was a short spell of gospel, otherwise probably just Punto Cinco when anything at all was heard.

A nice evening in the shack without DX...

A brief report from Jan Edh tells us the following:
Fredriksfors 7.3 - almost nothing
A "bad night" in Fredriksfors, besides of nice weather (about 0 C.) and the already warm building, as Dan and Rolf were "on duty".
That´s the nice part of it.
The radio didn´t give much plesant to record and remember.
WWNN 1470, Pompano Beach was a little surprising at about 23.30 (UTC) - the best signal from the continent!
In the morning I listened from 03 UTC. Almost "only" Spanish speaking stations, and as far as I recognised only those you always expect to hear.
1350 could be the exception, but probably it was WEGA, PR that took over from earlier dominant Ciudad del Mar, Cuba. Something to check anyhow. Rebelde on 1550.
After sunrise the stations started to fade out rapidly. At the same
time (short before 07) some NA-stations came through, but then with a low signal and for quite a short time. Short after 07 most of the signals were gone.

My expectations were for something better this night. It looked so good when I checked the ”sights”. And even, it started quite good also...It was a beautiful but quite cold (some -20 C) night. Almost as daylight with a full moon (missing just for a day), shining over heavy new snow on the ground and trees. But as Dan Andersson (he and Hans Olofsson with his SDR 5000 joined later) had put on the heating it was some +10 C inside when I arrived at about 21.00 UTC, I could just put some firewood in the stove and begin listening...And it started well even then; The Philippines on1314, Japan on 1413 and some eastern NA-stations when I changed antenna. A wink of some daytimers even. Then very broad (west coast to the Caribbean and Colombia) but nothing ”interesting”.And it didn´t make it better when I made some misstake with my recording on the IQ and only have two short files from the morning. Of course missing all that great stuff that was audible just that time...
