Heard in Fredriksfors Jan 17 - 20 - strong solar storm

January 17th.I was up and running again and considering the current antenna conditions it was a little better, although it is mostly weak signals and a lot of interference. Mostly Colombia but actually some Peruvians too. At 07 slightly better strengths on many stations, including some NA, but only regular.

18^th.. Most interesting was a Peruvian on 1360 (which FD ID'd a couple of days earlier) which was heard, but too weak and too noisy, with ID and then cd at 01.03. Otherwise Ideal 1130 very strong at 03 and also other Venezuela (1320, 1450, 1490) at 03 – 04, and some regular from Colombia and PR. Not a good morning.

19^th. it looked for a long time that Harbour Light and Ideal (1130, especially at 03) were the only ones that would come through with acceptable strength. But at 06 – 07 there were suddenly strong signals on high frequencies, some NA, some Colombia, Carraviz on 1570 and Maranatha 1440. However, they all not only had strength in common. They were also so distorted that they were “incomprehensible”.

20^th. – strongest solar disturbance in 24 years wrote Jan Alvestad. A check of the band does not contradict in any way – not a transatlantic all night. Carrier on 920 which may have been Paraguay at 02 and 04, towards dawn carriers on 1350 and 1400 (WEGA and Harbour Light?) but far from “audio”.

Heard in Fredriksfors Jan 6 - 15 - limited opportunities

January 6^th. If only we had the antennas in order this morning could have been quite fun. It took a long time before any signals at all. Ideal on 1130 was one of the first 02 and then went surprisingly well as did Greenland on 570 and 650. Some regular Colombians at 03 and then more and more NA and at best 06 - 07 but far too much noise and crackling on our only "whole" antenna for anything weaker to be able to be ID-ed.

7^th. with a little "proof" that the antenna does not behave as expected - a Thai station on 1350 went brilliant at 22. At 00 KXE as a local on 1540. Some east coast NA later, but noise and an "angry chatter" increased and towards morning there were hardly any signals at all.

8^th. VOCM was good already at 22 and most of the night, otherwise fewer NA this night. Instead, it was mainly some Colombians who made it through the interference.

9^th. some mixed NA and Colombia with a small peak at 02 and then also with Puerto Rico. At 03 only Colombians left, but they were soon drowned out for the rest of the morning by far too strong interference.

Heard in Fredriksfors Jan 1 - 5 - very limited listening

January 1^st. New Year's Eve sounded very different to how it has been lately. Whether it is due to the conditions, or whether it is because some snow has fallen over the "usable" 285-degree antenna, which is largely down to the ground, is anyone's guess. In any case, the level of interference was suddenly perceived to be significantly lower. There was also significantly more NA (at 02 – 03 and then again at 07), even though there were yhe “usual” stations but from a bit inland, and mostly weak signals. Quite chaotic though, since Colombia and/or PR were also on at the same time on most frequencies.

2^nd. it took a long time before there were any signals at all. Between 02 – 04 there was however a bit of “action” with mainly the NA east coast. Some with quite ok strength, but only regular stations. Some Colombians too. Few and weak signals towards the morning.

3^rd. the noise level was again far too high. Harbour Light 1400 and WEGA 1350 were the only ones that really got through., a handful more that I recognized (1130, 1140, 1200, 1320, 1580) and that I probably could have identified if I had tried a little harder...

4^th. Not until 02 did some signals start to come through on the band, only the most common ones from Colombia, Venezuela and Puerto Rico as well as HIAK 1440. A few NAs also later but generally far too weak and far too bad.

5^th. nothing recorded due to power outage. Unfortunately we will probably have to accept that our antennas in Fredriksfors are now in far too poor condition for it to be really meaningful to listen after all the storms. The restoration will take a long time.

Heard in Fredriksfors Dec 29 - 31 - Back again after the storm

On December 29^th. I was up and running again, the power was back but the storm felled lots of trees and all the antennas except 285 with the reverse direction of 105 degrees are heavily damaged. 285 degrees is at least intact, however I still don't know if it is partly knocked to the ground or hanging up. Nothing audible until around 03 when some of the most common NA stations started to come through. On high frequencies then came the usual South Americans, best at 05.

30^th. Very noisy. A few NA with WHBY 1150 as the best At 06 some mixed LA with decent strength but poor sound and still far too noisy.

31^st. the last night of the year was just as sad as the previous ones. I got a little hope at 02 - 03 when it "simmered" a little on the band. NA signals, but too weak and too noisy to be of any use and long before 04 everything was gone..No trace of WNAM 1280 and their "DX test" before closing for good. A few "uninteresting" LA at 06...

Heard in Fredriksfors Dec 24 - 28 - Bad conditions and storm

December 24^th. there were some weak signals from Brazil at 00. At 02 and a couple of hours ahead a little more southerly signals especially Argentina, but not particularly good. Bad towards the morning with some usual from Brazil weak at 07.

25^th. very poor signals, possibly with a little overweight for Colombia and Puerto Rico.

26^th.some Colombians and probably also Puerto Rico, most of it too weak to sort out. After 04 also a few NA east coast but blurred signals.

27^th. it was different, but not good. Almost no signals from Latin America all night. Instead NA, "best" between 00 and 03 but quite blurred signals and a lot of fading. After 04 nothing but noise.

28^th. nothing recorded due to power outage caused by storm “Johannes”. Very extensive damage was caused throughout the region, leaving us with fallen trees and torn antennas and, it seems, only one antenna (285 degrees with a backswing of 105) intact!
