Heard in Fredriksfors Oct. 19 - 24 - no good time for listening

October 19th was, by all accounts from others, "a fine North American night." I cannot share that sentiment. The 285-degree antenna setting at Fredriksfors clearly did not suit the prevailing conditions at all. Sure, North American stations dominated, but they were only the most common ones; furthermore, there was heavy, slow fading on most signals, along with an excessively high noise floor. There were quite a few Colombian stations, too, but nothing particularly interesting among them.

Oct. 20 was even worse. I set up for Asia during the late afternoon and evening (= October 19th.). Conditions were excellent; a quick check revealed several Japanese and Philippine stations, Taiwan "of course," and even Australia on 1152 kHz. The recording was running - or so I thought - but when I went to review the files, I found nothing! I had forgotten to save what I was "recording"!

Oct. 21 a rather "sparse" night in terms of stations, though not a bad one by any means. I logged a fairly uncommon Peruvian station (1180 kHz) and a new one for me from the Dominican Republic (670 kHz) - so, I really can't complain. Had there not been so much football coverage from the Colombian stations, it likely would have been even better.

Oct. 22, the interference caused much worse conditions than I had hoped for. The lower part of the band was covered in a "carpet of crackle" until after 03:00, while nothing could be heard on the upper part at all. By far the best signal of the night came from Radio Salta on 840 kHz, when they played the national anthem around 03:00. Between 03:00 and 04:00, a few stations from Colombia were occasionally audible at decent levels (850, 930, 1110, 1370, 1580 kHz). Religious stations on 1160 and 1400 kHz also came through okay at times, whereas WEGA 1350 kHz was only heard sporadically - a real disappointment I hadn't expected.

Oct. 23 the significant change was that the crackling interference now covered the entire mediumwave band... It wasn't until 02:00 that the first signals broke through - a very strong one from Ideal 1130 KHz, along with a few Colombian stations. They remained audible for a little over an hour, after which there was hardly anything strong enough to avoid being completely drowned out by the crackling.

Oct. 24 the persistent crackling had almost entirely disappeared again. A few more stations were audible - mostly the more common Colombian ones, though some from Puerto Rico also came through a bit better. Overall, however, it was yet another night that failed to yield anything of interest.
